Madhuri Dixit (born 15 May 1967) is an Indian film actress who is known for her work in Hindi cinema. Often cited as one of the best actresses in Bollywood, Dixit made her film debut in Abodh (1984) and received wider public recognition with Tezaab (1988). She went on to establish herself as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses, acknowledged for several of her performances, her beauty, and her accomplished dancing.
Some of her proceeding films include such box-office hits as Ram Lakhan (1989),Tridev (1989), Parinda (1989), Dil (1990), Saajan (1991), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Raja (1995). After a relatively low phase, she reinvented herself with the romance Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and subsequently received critical acclaim for her work in films like Mrityudand (1997), Pukar (2000), Lajja (2001) and Devdas (2002). In 2002, she took a sabbatical from films to raise her children and made a comeback with the musical Aaja Nachle in 2007. Dixit also judged two seasons of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa '.
Dixit has won six Filmfare Awards, four for Best Actress, one for Best Supporting Actress and one special Filmfare award for completing 25 years in Bollywood. She holds the record for the highest number of Best Actress nominations  at Filmfare. In 2008, she was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award by the Government of India.

Madhuri Dixit is a native of Mumbai, India. She was born on 15 May 1967 to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit in a Marathi-speaking Chitpavan family. Dixit attended Divine Child High School and Mumbai University and studied to be a microbiologist. She is a trained Kathak dancer and a great admirer of the art.She first appeared on Bollywood's tinsel screen in 1986 with two releases 'Abodh' and 'Swati', and from then continued to act in approximately 66 movies, as well has lent her voice as a playback singer in 'Devdas' and 'Wajood'. She has won approximately 12 awards from Filmare, Star Screen and Zee for her performances in 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun', 'Dil To Pagal Hai', 'Devdas', 'Raja', 'Mrityudand', and 'Lajja'.

In 1999 she got married to Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene, a Cardiovascular Surgeon, belonging to the same Caste as the Dixit family, and relocated to Denver, Colorado, U.S.A., where she subsequently gave birth to two sons, Arin and Ryan in March, 2003 and March 8, 2005 respectively.

Since December of 2006, the Nene family temporarily living in India as Madhuri is starring in 'Aaja Nachle' which is being directed by Anil Mehta, and produced by Yash Chopra.

Madhuri Dixit started her career with Rajshri productions Abodh. She won 11 major awards and 26 nominations. She became the actress of the millennium in 2000. In Guinness Book of Records Millennium versions she is reported as the highest paid Indian actress. Madhuri is one of the most loved and admired person in the film industry. A movie was made by Ram Gopal Verma as a tribute to her named "main madhuri dixit banna chahti hoon".Though she made her debut with Abodh (1984), it was Tezaab (1988) that made her a star, in the true sense. She then starred in Ram Lakhan (1989), Parinda (1989), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990) and Prahaar (1991). She won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in Dil (1990). She went on to star in Saajan (1991), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Raja (1995) and Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997). She played the role of Madhu Mehra, a rich and arrogant girl who falls in love and later leaves her house to marry. The film became one of the biggest box-office hits of the year in India, and Dixit's performance earned her the first Filmfare Best Actress Award of her career.
Post the success of Dil she starred Saajan , a love triangle, along Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt which did good business in 1991.  She starred with Anil Kapoor in 1992 in movies like Khel, Zindagi Ek Jua and Beta. One of Madhuri’s most famous dance sequences ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’ was from Beta. Dixit's performance in Beta, that of a woman married to an illiterate, well-meaning man who exposes her scheming mother-in-law, won her a second Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
In 1993, Khalnayak with Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff was a blockbuster while her dance sequence ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ created ripples as she sets off to trap the criminal Ballu. If Anjaam with Shah Rukh Khan in 1994 failed to do well, Hum Aapke Hai Kaun with Salman Khan broke records and became one of the biggest grossers in the history of Hindi cinema till that time. This added another feather, a rather bright one, in her cap. She won her third Filmfare Best Actress Award.  n that same year, Dixit was also nominated in the same category for her performance in Anjaam. She had two releases in 1995, Raja and Yaarana.

After facing an unsuccessful year in 1996, the very graceful Bollywood diva appeared  in the 1997 release Yash Chopra’s Dil to Paagal Hai in which she was seen as Pooja, a dancer, for which she won a fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award. In that same year, Dixit starred in Prakash Jha's Mrityudand. Dixit's performance in the film earned her the Best Actress award at the annual Star Screen Awards. It won the Best Feature Film Award at the Cinema Tout Ecran in Geneva and the Bangkok Film Festival.

In 2000, she faced Anil Kapoor once again in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Pukar as Anjali who wreaks havoc in the life of Major Jaidev Rajvansh. Madhuri Dixit has been the muse for the famous Indian painter M.F. Husain. He made a film in 2000 named Gaja Gamini, in which Madhuri acted. The film was intended as a tribute to Dixit herself, explores the different facets of a woman.
In 2002, she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, a much anticipated release that year. Madhuri donned the role of a courtesan Chandramukhi whose love for Devdas doesn’t save him. Her performance earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. The film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. 
The following year a film named after her, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon!, was released in which a woman (played by Antara Mali) aspires to become the new Madhuri Dixit by trying her luck in the Bollywood industry.
2006 to 2010

On 25 February 2006 she performed on stage for the first time in six years at the Filmfare Awards to music from her last movie Devdas. On 7 December 2006, Dixit returned to Mumbai with her husband and sons to start filming for Aaja Nachle . The film released in November 2007 and, despite the critics panning it, Dixit's performance was highly appreciated, with the New York Times commenting about her that "she's still got it"
On Women's International Day in 2007, Dixit topped Rediff's list of the Best Bollywood Actresses Ever. 
In May 2008, she was given a tribute by Indian Film Festival at Los Angeles.
In March 2010, The Economic Times named Madhuri Dixit in the list of the "33 women who made India proud". On 16 November 2010, after a gap of three years Madhuri arrives in Mumbai to Judge a dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa  fourth season. The show premiered on December 12, 2010 on Sony Entertainment Television. The show opened to a rating of 5.6, the highest among its four seasons and catapulted Sony to the No.3 position.
